Introduction
Review on Teaching Development Projects
Identifying and Promoting Good Practices on Pedagogies
– Inspiration and Adaptation
Over the years, many Teaching Development and Language Enhancement Grant (TDLEG) projects have successfully brought about changes in pedagogies, revitalized teaching content, and introduced engaging learning activities. Project Investigators (PIs) are encouraged to share these best practices at the CUHK annual Teaching and Learning Expo, as well as at conferences and workshops. However, these are typically one-off events. Creating an online module or webpage is a more effective way to sustain and disseminate the impact of these exemplary practices and pedagogies among colleagues.
In the last triennium, our team reviewed 96 TDLEG projects from the 2009–2012 and 2012–2015 trienniums, including the 2016 roll-over year. Nine exemplary projects were selected and showcased. The corresponding and selected projects are presented here [2009–2016].
The current project is a continuation and follows similar procedures. Its aims are:
(i) to review and reflect on TDLEG projects from the 2016–2019 triennium;
(ii) to identify good practices from the selected projects; and
(iii) to disseminate these practices.
This website and the Prezi presentation of the shortlisted projects are part of the proposal, serving both as an inventory and a dissemination platform for these outstanding TDLEG projects.
Strategy
Selection Criteria and Strategy
As mentioned, our team has adopted the strategy from the previous triennium, with further modifications to make the selection criteria more aligned and compatible to the changing direction and environment of teaching and learning at the University. As a result, the shortlisted projects in this triennium are expected to demonstrate the following features:
1.Fit into the University Goals and Strategies (G&S) from the Academic Development Plan (ADP)
2.Completed wide scope of objectives and deliverables, and brought impacts to students’ learning
3.Demonstrated innovative and outstanding feature(s) in curriculum design
4.Being sustainable and highly transferrable across disciplines
5.Conducted efficient evaluation and showed improvement
Regarding Criterion 1, the University has outlined its Teaching and Learning (T&L) policy in the Academic Development Plan (ADP) [https://www.cuhk.edu.hk/strategicplan/cuhk2025/education.html], setting specific goals and strategies for undergraduate programmes. When Principal Investigators (PIs) are drafting proposals or implementing projects, it is advantageous to align their project objectives and deliverables with these institutional goals. Each goal in the ADP is supported by a set of distinct teaching and learning strategies. Projects that demonstrate alignment with these strategies are more likely to contribute meaningfully to the University’s broader educational mission.
• G1 Global Perspective, 21st Century Skills, Crossing Knowledge Boundaries
• G2 Adaptive Programme & Pedagogy Under New Normal
• G3 Student Taking Ownership of Learning & Stepping out of Comfort Zone
Shortlisted Exemplary TDLEG Projects
Shortlisted Exemplary TDLEG Projects
In the 2016–2019 triennium, a total of 98 Teaching Development (TD) and Language Enhancement (LE) projects were funded, covering a wide range of themes and focus areas [https://www.cuhk.edu.hk/clear/tdg/1619.html]. All projects were reviewed thoroughly and comprehensively, including their proposals, final reports, outcomes, and deliverables such as websites, course materials, and other relevant outputs.
To ensure a robust selection process, each project was cross-matched with the University’s Goals and Strategies (G&S), project themes, and distinctive features. This approach helped to highlight the unique characteristics and overall quality of the shortlisted projects.
Seventeen (17) projects has been finally shortlisted and divided into 5 categories.
