Supporting Internationalization of Curriculum for Sustainability Education Workshop Series – Building Teacher Competencies for SE: The Impact of IoC for SE on students’ development of 21st Century Skills
Overview: | This workshop will explore the importance of the Internationalization of Curriculum (IoC) in advancing Sustainability Education (SE). Participants will learn how IoC enhances interdisciplinary learning and integrates the UN SDGs into curricula, aligning with CUHK’s strategic initiatives. The sessions will provide insights into content design strategies as well as case studies sharing on the incorporation of sustainability thinking into service-learning and on a CUHK SDG-GE experiential learning course “Experiencing and Rethinking Science and Technology in Agriculture”. This workshop aims to equip teaching staff with knowledge and strategies to empower students in addressing local and global sustainability challenges. |

4:00 – 4:10 PM | Prof. Vivian LEE Introduction of the speakers and the purpose of this workshop |
4:10 – 4:50 PM | Prof. Amos TAI Session 1 Presentation “Education for Sustainable Development: Content Design and Service-Learning Applications” Abstract: In an era marked by pressing global challenges such as climate change, socioeconomic inequality, and resource depletion, the roles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) have never been more critical. Universities, in particular, can make substantial contribution to ESD for the betterment of local and global societies. In this talk, we will first define what sustainability thinking and sustainable development are, based on the three-dimension framework of economic, social and environmental sustainability. We will then explore strategies to integrate sustainability thinking and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into higher education. Using CUHK’s SDG Study Scheme, Future17, SDG Forum and other ESD initiatives as examples, we will discuss approaches to content design that focus on interdisciplinary learning and real-world problem solving. We will also discuss how to integrate sustainability thinking and SDGs into service-learning, using a generalized framework to highlight how community engagement can enhance student learning while addressing local sustainability issues such as poverty, inequality, climate vulnerability and environmental damage. By showcasing successful case studies and practical examples, we aim to inspire higher educators to adopt transformative practices that can empower students to become active contributors to a sustainable future. |
4:50 – 5:10 PM | Dr. Kenneth Li Session 2 Sharing “Education for Sustainable Development at University General Education and the Incorporation of Internationalization of Curriculum in an Experiential Learning Course” Abstract: The mission of University General Education (GE) is to “equip students with the intellectual capacity for understanding critical issues, ideas, and values of humanity in modern society. It nurtures students to be educated persons capable of making informed judgment and meeting the challenges of the ever-changing world” (Office of University GE, CUHK). These attributes align perfectly with those of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), which aims to prepare our students to address the global challenges of environmental, social, and economic sustainability. Aligned with the Goals and Strategies (G1, S1) in the Strategic Plan of CUHK (CUHK 2025), a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Study Scheme in the GE curricula was developed. GE Courses that address the United Nations SDGs in the curricula are recognized as SDG-GE courses. For example, the SDG-GE course “Experiencing and Rethinking Science and Technology in Agriculture” (UGEB2296) has incorporated the discussion of SDGs (e.g. SDG 2 Zero Hunger and SDG 15 Life on Land) in relation to modern agriculture and permaculture into the curriculum. The outbound study trip provides a valuable opportunity for students to feel the beauty and taste the challenges of sustainable agriculture through learning, working, and living with sustainable agriculture practitioners in an overseas permaculture garden in Australia. This talk will share the overview of ESD at University GE at CUHK and the incorporation of IoC in the University GE course UGEB2296. |
