Al and Workforce Development in Libraries – Overcoming Barriers and Embracing Lifelong Learning

Seminar Abstract: This talk explores libraries’ critical role in preparing staff and patrons for an increasingly AI-embedded future. Drawing from two national surveys on AI literacy among library professionals in the US, the talk identifies persistent challenges, including limited access to AI tools, fragmented knowledge, and the time pressures often inhibiting effective AI integration.

Building on these insights, we will showcase real-world initiatives, specifically the University of New Mexico’s pilot GPT-4 Exploration Programme, which exemplifies how hands-on, context-driven learning can increase AI confidence and proficiency. We will explore core adult learning principles tailored to the unique needs of AI training, sharing practical strategies to overcome common barriers and cultivate a culture of experimentation and skill-building. Attendees will leave equipped with forward-looking strategies to enhance AI integration, helping libraries lead the charge in the transformation of tomorrow’s workforce.
