Abstract: | As artificial intelligence continues to transform education, its application in language learning and teaching offers immense potential. This seminar will introduce technologies developed through our QEF project that enables automated, detailed evaluations of student-crafted essays, with the aim of promoting learning and improvement. Additionally, we will present technologies that support automated training for speaking tasks in group interactions. The seminar will also highlight AI-supported English reading and listening tasks, demonstrating their ability to enhance the overall language learning experience.

Speakers: | Professor Helen MENG Professor, Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, CUHK Professor Helen MENG is the Patrick Huen Wing Ming Chair Professor of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). As Founding Director of CUHK’s Ministry of Education Key Laboratory in Human-centric Computing and the InnoCentre named Centre for Perceptual and Interactive Intelligence, she drives innovation in AI and speech technologies. Her team’s AI-based dementia screening project was awarded the first HKSARG RGC Theme-based Research Scheme award in AI in 2019. As Curriculum Lead of the CUHK-JC AI4Future Project since 2019, she has developed Hong Kong’s first pre-tertiary AI curriculum, emphasizing ethics, earning the 2021 Hong Kong ICT Gold Award. Her accolades include the IEEE SPS Leo Beranek Meritorious Service Award (2019) and fellowships from IEEE, ISCA, HKIE and Distinguished Fellow of HKCS. Her team has secured multiple awards, including INTERSPEECH Best Student Paper (2023, 2024) and International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva Medals (2024, 2025). Dr. Kun LI Co-founder and CEO, SpeechX Limited Dr. Kun LI is the co-founder and CEO of SpeechX Limited and an Honorary Research Associate at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). He earned his B.E. from Zhejiang University (2006), M.E. from Tsinghua University (2009), and Ph.D. from CUHK (2015). Dr. LI founded SpeechX Limited in 2016, focusing on AI technologies for language learning. In 2021, he launched LingoTask, an AI-driven English learning and teaching platform developed with CUHK and supported by the Quality Education Fund (QEF) since 2023. |
