Introduction to Universal Design for Learning Guideline 3.0
This is a series of 3 Micro-modules based on the latest Universal Design for Learning Guideline 3.0 introduced by CAST in 2024. Guidelines on application of UDL3.0 in Classroom Teaching and in Assessment and Feedback are also offered in Micro-module 2 and Micro-module 3 respectively.

The micro-modules will introduce you to the current support CUHK offering our SEN students, and the challenges of different types of SEN students faced in their learning.
Micro-module 1: Current Support to Students with Special Educational Needs (SENs)
Description
Meeting the needs of students is always not as straightforward as we imagine, especially during the pandemic. Prof. Alan Chan, the Provost of CUHK, mentions that the school endeavors to improve the infrastructure to ensure that all students will have good access to them. It is vital to note that every member of the school can play a significant role in this changing process, and hopefully, with more work, the importance of developing a better study environment for SEN students are being recognized.

Micro-module 2: Students with Physical Disability
Description
Did you ever think about the difficulties that physically disabled students will have when attending online lessons during this pandemic? In this video, two students who have difficulties in visual and hearing ability shared their stories at school. Several recommendations to help the physically disabled students are suggested by different representatives of the school. Adjustments for enabling a more structured and supportive learning environment is introduced.Materials

Micro-module 3: Students with Mental Difficulties
Description
During online learning, there are fewer opportunities for teachers to know whether students are doing well in the class, causing great difficulties for teachers to keep track of the students. It is suggested that teaching staff should actively solicit feedback from students regarding the teaching arrangement and observe closely if the students have been suffered emotionally from their academic progress. Prof. Gladys Tang hoped that students can always consult help from them and to know that we are with them.

Micro-module 4: Students with ASD, ADHD and Dyslexia
Description
A high degree of self-discipline is often essential in academic success. However, it is not that easy for some students who are suffering from Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and dyslexia. In this video, teachers shared their experience on how they adjust the teaching methods to cater to the needs of these SEN students. An illustration of the role of speech therapy to assist students’ learning is also discussed.

Micro-module 5: Learning Experience & Needs of Students with Depression
Description
Depression always affects students’ learning. In this video, a student who suffered from depression shared her needs and learning experience in CUHK. The support from peers, teachers and academic advisor has played an essential role in facilitating students with mental difficulties in their studies.

Micro-module 6: Peer Support for Students with Mental Disorders
Description
Establishing a peer support network/connection is vital for students with SEN in their university lives. In this video, a student shared her experience in supporting her classmates with mental disorders. It is suggested that a more supportive learning environment is beneficial to students’ learning. Mental health education should be promoted in the University.
