The one-hour online session about effective feedback is scheduled for 2 December 2021, delivered by Professor Michael Henderson, Professor of Digital Futures in the Faculty of Education, Monash University. The workshop is intended to enhance our understanding of underlying principles of effective feedback and strategies to incorporate digital devices into the feedback processes.

Abstract: |
Digital audio and video feedback strategies: scarily personal
Feedback is arguably the most important component of an instructional process. Without effective feedback, students are limited in their capacity to make accurate judgments about the quality of their work, and in their ability to change their future performance. However, despite a substantial body of literature aimed at improving practice, feedback remains a frequent source of dissatisfaction for both students and educators.
In this seminar, Professor Michael Henderson will challenge traditional conceptions of feedback and offer a new learner-centred definition and framework. He will then report on a decade of research around a simple and relatively quick strategy of replacing the usual text-based comments, with audio, video or screencast recordings. Students consistently report a reduction in ambiguity, increased motivation, reflection and future strategising, as well as improved student satisfaction and stronger relationships with their teacher. However, digital feedback is not a panacea. This session will discuss a recommended structure, technology, process and key principles for content delivery.

Bio: |
Professor Michael Henderson is Professor of Digital Futures in the Faculty of Education at Monash University. He is a world expert in the field of digital education, in particular the effective use of technology in internet-enabled teaching and learning. In 2020 he was identified by The Australian (23/9/20) as the national Field Leader in Education research. Unique to his profile is that his research spans early childhood, schools, universities and professional learning contexts. This broad perspective has allowed him to broker theories and perspectives relating to digital technologies across what may be seen as impermeable boundaries.
Professor Michael Henderson has a continuing interest in all technology-enabled learning contexts. However, his current research projects are generally aligned with the three broad fields: assessment and feedback, risk (wellbeing and creativity), and effective teaching and learning with online technologies. In particular, his research in assessment feedback over the last 5 years has had a large impact on research and practice nationally and internationally.
