Almost all teachers teaching Hong Kong students have the experience of encountering dead silence when raising the following question in class: “Are there any questions?” Some students may have questions in mind, but they often prefer to ask the teacher after class. Others may feel embarrassed thinking that their peers may perceive them asking ‘silly questions’. It is not uncommon that some students never take the opportunity to ask questions during or after the class. Apparently, there is an established taboo of not asking questions. This kind of learning behaviour will limit their chances to seek timely clarification or rectify misconception of the information received during any teaching and learning activities. It is often too late to give timely support to students when they undertake the assessment tasks in this state of mind and receive poor academic results. To flip the entrenched learning habit, teachers can create a culture of student-generated (SG) questioning practice. In the seminar, Prof. Lilian Vrijmoed will share a successful strategy to facilitate her students to develop an inquisitive mind when they attend her class, and Dr Hodgson will share findings of the SG questions of the course.
