Abstract:
At the heart of university education there must be an emphasis on students developing academic integrity and ethical behaviour, which are essential for their personal development and future professional careers. Yet, the advent of information technology (IT) seems to have exacerbated issues around observing academic integrity; the seemingly unlimited resources readily available on the internet are often used in inappropriate ways.
This project uses IT to combat an important issue brought on and worsened by IT itself through applying augmented reality (AR) with mobile technology to bring scenarios of academic integrity and ethics to real-life situations for students. It is led by Hong Kong Baptist University with three partners: The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong and The Education University of Hong Kong. Mobile learning paths called ‘Trails of Ethics and Integrity’ (TIEs) have been created on our respective campuses, in which students can walk through real-world locations where ethical dilemmas might arise. They then make use of their mobile devices to review the different scenarios and respond to them with ethical decisions. To ascertain the effectiveness of these mobile learning trails in helping students to learn such abstract conceptual knowledge, their responses and related data are gathered and analysed.
In this seminar, we will share our results so far which show positive effects of this approach in using the TIEs to help students reinforce the links between theoretical learning about academic integrity and ethics, and the practical application of such learning in real-life contexts. We have also developed subject-specific TIEs where students face cases of ethical dilemmas specific to their disciplines and have to respond according to professional norms and standards. As issues of academic integrity and ethics cover all disciplines, through this experience sharing seminar, we hope to arouse interests in colleagues to try out the TIE to be transplanted to CUHK as a teaching and learning activity in their courses to raise the awareness of such important yet abstract concepts.
